SERVING OTHERS
Serving...serving family, serving community, serving God. Now more than ever we need to be comfortable serving others. We need as mothers to encourage and guide our children to serve others in every way possible. It is at the very base of spiritual existence and the very core of true humanism.

Why are there tragedies like the earthquake that battered Haiti? Why do children in our country go to bed hungry? Why are some children born with special challenges? Why do the elderly lay in nursing homes lonley? Honestly we don't have the answers, but we can ask ourselves what we can learn from these situations. What can we teach our children? Those of us with a voice need to help those that cannot help themselves. We need to speak for those unable to stand up for themselves. How do we accomplish this? It is difficult to write a check for a major donation, join the peace core or help with recovery efforts abroad, but we can encourage and help our children to do the following and much more: collect canned goods, help address, sign, and seal cards for recovering soliders, visit people in a nursing home, serve meals at the homeless shelter.

Often as moms we feel bad because we are not doing more with our lives, but remember serving our family is so important. Many times this is thought of as a negative. Quite the contrary. There is nothing negative about a mother who cares for her family, guides her children through life's lessons, and supports her husband as he provides for the family. One of the most beautiful and necessary lessons we can teach our children is service. Service starts as example at home and from there we are able to spread it to our friends, community, and beyond.
